The magic of beginning
There’s something utterly magical about watching a child hold a blank journal for the first time. Their eyes light up with possibility, their fingers trace the edges of pages yet to be filled, and somewhere in that moment, a spark ignites. This year, we had the privilege of witnessing this magic unfold through our artfelt collaboration with the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch.
The art of self-discovery through journalling
At the heart of our programme lay something beautifully simple yet profoundly powerful: personalised art journals. Each student began their creative journey by tie-dyeing their own journal cover, creating a unique canvas that would become their companion for months to come.
But these weren’t just art books, they were explorations of personal growth, spaces for experimentation, and mirrors reflecting each child’s developing artistic voice.
Through the pages of their journals, we watched students:
- Explore freely without the pressure of perfection
- Document their learning journey as they mastered colour theory, perspective, and texture
- Build confidence through regular creative practice
- Develop their unique artistic voice away from judgement
- Process emotions and experiences through visual expression
From mystery boxes to masterpieces
As the programme progressed, excitement built towards the final challenge. Students had already had structured lessons covering key art fundamentals such as:
- Colour theory
- Perspective
- Texture
- Various techniques and approaches to art-making
Final artworks
With these skills in place the students were tasked with creating their final art piece so they could put into practice what they had learned. Now picture this: a box filled with mystery topics, each one waiting to spark imagination and creativity. Students reached in, pulled out their prompts, and let themselves be guided by their imaginations and newfound knowledge.
By removing the paralysis of choice, students were freed to interpret, imagine, and create in ways they might never have considered.
As a result we saw:
- Watercolour landscapes that seemed to breathe with life
- Soft pastel portraits that captured not just faces, but souls
- Oil pastel abstracts that burst with emotion and movement
- Mixed-media pieces that told stories only their creators could understand
Each artwork became a window into a young person’s inner world, their unique perspective on life, and their growing confidence as artists.
These nascent artworks were showcased in the prestigious Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch during September. Not tucked away in a school corridor or relegated to a community hall, but displayed with the same care and respect given to renowned artists.
This wasn’t just an exhibition; it was a celebration of potential, creativity, and the incredible capacity children have to move and inspire us when given the chance.
Museum visitors could vote for their favourite piece, and next month the winners will be announced. Yet we are already so proud of all of the learners that participated in this journey of creation and self-discovery, you did wonderful work!
