Working in partnership with Stellenbosch University, the SI helped the PETCO Recycling Company to raise funds from the National Research Foundation to co-sponsor this conference of the global plastic recycling sector that took place in Cape Town on 21 November. Mark Swilling was a keynote speaker. He located the growing plastic recycling sector within the wider global context of rising resource prices and the related increasing popularity of the ‘green economy’.

As a case study he spoke about the world’s first plastic pallet made from recycled plastic manufactured in Cape Town by a company called Lomold. This award-winning innovation speaks to the core three-way challenge facing South Africa: how to create more jobs through innovation-driven manufacturing that demonstrates in practice how it is possible to do more with less (resource efficiency) while at the same time productively re-using a waste product.
