Malawi wins Habitat Award

Malawi’s Homeless Federation was awarded a Habitat International best practice award this week for various housing projects in that country. The Sustainability Institute works with Shackdwellers International (SDI) in various ways, including with the Federation of the Urban Poor (FEDUP) in South Africa and the Malawi Homeless Federation. Advisors from the SI helped the Malawi federation design and build adobe brick houses. This resulted in a high level visit to Lynedoch earlier this year by Federation leaders, their NGO support organisation, and officials from the Municipalities and National Government. After that visit, the SI has requested to assist the Malawi Federation to build 700 more houses, but this time they will be high density and double story. Malcolm Worby (architect) and Justin (engineer) left today for Malawi to work with the Malawi Federation and Government officials on how best to implement this plan.
