The Lynedoch Sustainable RDP house is now complete. It was built using SABS approved adobe bricks in order to be registered with the NHBRC. It includes one of South Africa’s first fully integrated DC mini-grid which means that the appliances within the house (lights, TV, DSTV, ghetto blaster, fridge, fan) are all 12 volt systems that can be powered by the 425 watt solar pv panels on the roof.
It has a solar hot water geyser and a 220 volt Eskom supply as a backup supply. Stanley and Thembi, who used to live in a shack in Khayelitsha, are now the proud householders of the most sustainable house in the Lynedoch EcoVillage.
