The Sustainability Institute is a non-profit trust, founded in 1999. An international living and learning centre focussing on studies and experience in ecology, community and spirit, we work in partnership with the School of Public Management and Planning, University of Stellenbosch in the following areas of  education (Masters and PhD degrees in Sustainable Development Planning and Sustainable Agriculture), Early Childhood Development, Community Development Practice and Management, project facilitation to establish Sustainable Neighbourhood Developments in various localities,policy research in the sustainable development sector. The Institute is located in the Lynedoch EcoVillage, a place where we have provided development facilitation to create a space for sustainable living and learning.

Owned by ‘The Business Place Philippi’ – a Section 21 Company – and with the property surrounded by Browns Farm, Crossroads and Nyanga, the Philippi Neighborhood Development is set to become a leading community-based sustainable neighbourhood project that demonstrates in practice all the basic elements of sustainable urban development.

Stellenbosch University has been awarded the responsibility to act as the hub of the new Postgraduate Programme in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies by the newly formed South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI), a division of the Central Energy Fund (CEF).  The hub will be supplemented by a number of research chairs forming the spokes of a hub and spoke model.

In October, 2004, fifteen Early Childhood Development practitioners from Manenburg, the local Lynedoch farming community and the Lynedoch crèche were accepted for an ECD training programme offering the following SAQA unit standards - ID 23116 ( Level 4) and ID 23117, (level 5). Tthese practitioners completed their coursework in Dec 2005 after which their assessment was moderated by the College of Cape Town. Last week a team from ETD Quality Assurance came to the Institute to verify the assessment and moderation of these learners. They have endorsed the results of the assessment and moderation.  This means that those learners who were assessed as competent will receive a statement of results about their qualifications from the ETDP SETA and will be uploaded onto the National Learners database.
