Learning for Sustainability: Accredited Training

The programme is presented on a modular basis at the Sustainability Institute over a period ranging from 1 - 2 years. The programme has been designed to maximise the number of entry and exit points in line with government policy to broaden the base of educational development. To a limited extent, course participants will be able to mix and match to suit their own preferences and circumstances.

Aims

Our programme is aimed at providing participants with an understanding and practical experience of combinations of healing, sustainability and ecological learning.

The programme will equip practitioners with knowledge, experience and skills in a teaching methodology that combines formal teaching, case methods, facilitated discussions and self managed learning, which allow each participant to shape their own studies in the following:

  • World Views: A look at how we see and can determine the world we and the children live in
  • An Ecological Approach: Living and learning in sustainable ways
  • The Child: Understanding who the child is; developmental stages; needs and how s/he learns
  • The Role and Purpose of Early Childhood Development: Seeing ourselves and the children with “new eyes”
  • The Role of Observation: What, when, where, who, how and why in the context of Montessori
  • The Role of Movement in the young child’s life: How and why we allow for this in the crèche
  • The Development of Independence – help children to help themselves: Making equipment and setting up an integrated environment that encourages this e.g.
    • Practical Life Activities
    • Education of the Senses
    • Language Activities
    • Number
    • Art/ music
    • Natural and social science
  • The Role of violence and abuse in our society: Simple tools for bringing healing to ourselves, our children and our communities
  • Alternative Methods of Learning – ways of summarizing

Accreditation offered

The programme is fully accredited in the following qualifications:

  • NQF level 4 ID 23116/, 58761
  • Level 5 Higher certificate ID 23117 and;
  • Level 5 (National Diploma ID 23118)

The Sustainability Institute has set up a Section 21 company (not for profit), called Learning for Sustainability, that is also a registered Further Education and Training College.

Staff Capacity

The ECD Childhoods programme has 6 fully qualified facilitators at its disposal.
The programme also has 4 registered Assessors and 2 registered Moderators.
 

Upcoming course

The first workshop will take place in June (15-19) 2009 and the second in July (27-31) as soon as we assessed the individual needs we will give dates of the rest of training.
