This paper was commissioned by UNEP as a position paper for the Summit for the Urban Environment Accords, Gwangju, South Korea, 11-13 October, 2011.

Paper presented by Mark Swilling to the Winelands Conference on Integrity and Governance, Stellenbosch University, April 2012. This papers applies material flow analysis to the question of Africa's future economic growth and proposes that unless new modes of governance are found the resource curse will persist.

This is the Strategic Development Framework for an ecologically designed development in Philippi at the so-called Old Cement Factory site. The Sustainability Institute, as a member of the Board of the Philippi Business Place, project-managed the design process. This provides a model for similar projects. The project was never implemented and the SI resigned from the Board in 2009.

This is a masters thesis by Claudia Stuewe, a German student who did her internship at the SI in 2009 in order to conduct research for this thesis - her focus was on the dynamics of innovation for sustainability.

Prof Tarak Kate, who is appointed as Extra-Professor in the School of Public Management and Planning and works in India with organic farmers, wrote this paper to bring to a wider audience the ideas that he discusses in the module he teaches each year on the Bphil programme (Biodiversity and Sustainable Agriculture). The paper emerged from a talk hosted by ECSECC in East London in 2009.

Report by Phetang Mabeba on the completion of othe Lynedoch Sustainable RDP House which was built using SABS approved adobe bricks and includes a DC Mini-grid.

Mandla Tsikata (Bphil 2009) and his lecturer Ben Sebitosi published this article in the international peer reviewed journal Energy in 2009. Drawing on an essay written by Tsikata, the authors reflect on South Africa's challenge to wean itself dependence on coal.
